About Chartering

Catamarans in the BVI

Why should I choose a yacht charter?

Chartering a motor yacht or sailing vessel is nothing at all like going on a cruise ship. You do not need to share your itinerary, activities, and meals with 1,500 other people. Instead, you receive personal attention and an individualized itinerary. You choose which beaches you visit, which sights you see, which activities you do, and you plan the timeline as well. A yacht charter is designed specifically with your tastes and preferences in mind.

What if I am not sure what I want to do?

We will be happy to help you focus on which activities would be best for your personality and preferences. Your captain and crew are professionals. They know the area and all of the best activities. They can recommend the best places for fishing, scuba diving, or snorkeling. They know where the most secluded beaches are. They can recommend the best shops, restaurants, or clubs.

What can I expect in regards to meals?

We will provide you with a food preference questionnaire to ascertain which meals you and your guests would enjoy most on your vacation. The questionnaire will not only include your preferences, but also any dietary needs, medical restrictions, or food allergies of the members of your party. You will also have the opportunity to speak with a crew member prior to your departure to clarify any questions. For the duration of your trip, the crew will then prepare fresh, gourmet meals, as well as your favorite cocktails.

What is included in the rates listed?

Sailing charters and some motor charters have all-inclusive rates. The rates are based on the number of guests, and include meals, beverages – including standard ship’s bar, fuel, ice, and water sports. You will have to pay cruising taxes, dockage fees, and communication fees separately. The rates listed for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately.

What are the running expenses?

Running expenses include food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and any other expense related to the charter.

The running expenses usually average 35% of the base charter rate. You will pay a 35% Advanced Provisioning Allowance (or APA) in far enough before your departure to allow the crew to provision the yacht. At the end of the charter, you will be given a complete statement of all expenses. If a balance remains, you will receive a refund; however, if expenses exceed the APA, you will be required to take care of the balance due prior to disembarkation.

Is it customary to tip the crew?

Yes. While a gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your yacht charter experience. The gratuity is typically 15%, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

How do I reserve a yacht?

Once you choose a yacht, we will put an “option” on the boat, which secures the boat for 1 week while you prepare the paperwork. A yacht charter contract must then be reviewed and signed. We will be happy to fully explain the terms and answer any questions you may have. You must include a deposit for the charter when submitting your completed contract.

How much is the deposit?

The initial deposit is 50% of the charter fee; however, if there are less than 30 days until departure, a full payment is required. The deposit is paid via bank wire transfer and is held by the yacht’s main agent in an escrow account until just before the charter date. When we receive your signed contract and deposit, you have officially booked the yacht.

What can I expect after the contract is signed and the deposit is made?

We will begin working with you to personalize your charter. You will receive your food and activity preference questionnaire. We will arrange a call between you and the crew. We’ll help you arrange flights, limousine transfers, and all other aspects of your charter.

When is the final payment due?

The balance of the charter, along with the APA funds if you are chartering a motor yacht, is due 45 days prior to your charter date.

What if I have to cancel?

Your charter agreement will include details about what to expect if you must cancel your trip. We recommend purchasing cancellation insurance to protect yourself in case unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel your vacation.

What if I disagree with the captain while on my charter?

A luxury yacht charter is meant to cater to your wishes in every possible aspect of your vacation. The captain and crew will do everything possible to meet and exceed your expectations. However, the captain’s primary responsibility is for the safety of his passengers and the yacht. He has the final decision on issues which may affect the safety of those on board.

I am ready to begin the process. What do I do?
