Things to do in the BVI

Virgin Gorda, BVI

The BVI is filled with sites of both educational and entertainment value, from historical locations, to the natural beauty, to fun activities.

Nature

J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens in Road Town on Tortola is a four-acre refuge of native, tropical plants.

Sage Mountain, located in the National Park in Tortola, is the highest point in the BVI. Although it is not technically a rain forest, because it does not quite receive the yearly 100 inches of rain required, it does share many other qualities of one.

Virgin Gorda’s highest point can be found in Gorda Peak National Park, a lush area with both native and exotic plant life as well as many mahogany trees.

Sandy Cay is a National Park and unspoiled island destination off of Jost Van Dyke.

Educational

Old Government House Museum above Road Town on Tortola was constructed in 1924 and was formerly the home for the Governor. The grand building now houses a museum and expansive collection of BVI postage stamps.

The Lower Estate Sugar Works Museumis an excellent choice for uncovering BVI history as well as learning more about its culture and indigenous flora and fauna.

History

Fort Recovery, located at the West End on Tortola, was built in 1660 by the Dutch and is the oldest standing structure in the BVI.

Located between West End and Road Town on Tortola is an old fort, built in 1794, known as The Dungeon because of its underground cell.

Fun

Soper’s Hole, located on the West End of Tortola, has restaurants, a marina, and a shopping wharf.

Little Fort National Park, which was once a Spanish fort, is now a wildlife sanctuary. It is located on Virgin Gorda on the south end of the Yacht Harbour.

The wreck of the RMS Rhone, located off of Salt Island, is a great diving site with an amazing number of underwater wildlife. The ship, a 310’ Royal Mail Ship, was sunk during a hurricane in 1867.

Visit legendary Norman Island, the supposed setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. The Bight caves are an excellent snorkeling site.

The BVI are a fantastic destination for sailing and motor boat charters.
