All About Anegada

Amongst the islands in the BVI is an island called Anegada that is two and a half miles wide and ten miles long. Sounds pretty normal so far, right?
It’s not, though. Anegada is an anomaly. The name itself, meaning “drowned land,” gives away part of this exotic locale’s secret. The island’s highest point reaches only 28 feet, essentially sea level. It is protected by the famous 18-mile-long Horseshoe Reef, which is the largest coral reef in the world
Anegada has been formed by the reefs, which have pushed out limestone and coral sands of ancient quality, while the other islands in the BVI are volcanic islands. Only a few hundred native people live on Anegada, in part because of its size and quirky characteristics and in part because of its remote geography
The island is completely surrounded by coral reefs, making it a snorkeling and diving paradise. Also, three hundred recorded ship wrecks nearby are perfect for scuba divers.
The wild life on Anegada is truly wild. The Anegada rock iguana, which is the most endangered iguana species in the world, can only be found on Anegada. Flamingoes can be seen year round and a variety of wading birds are attracted to the salt ponds on the island.
The people who originally inhabited this paradise lived off the ocean. They left behind large piles of conch shells – so many, in fact, that some piles even form islands. Modern-day Anegadans are skilled fishermen, supplying BVI markets with fresh fish and marine life.
Anegada is an ideal location for a BVI yacht charter. A yacht charter gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and on your own schedule. While you will definitely want to enjoy the quality, fresh meals that are available at the restaurants on Anagada, you may also want the freedom to hop to another island before breakfast is served.
