BVI Vacation: Jost Van Dyke

island Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the British Virgin Islands, with a unique personality and a style unlike any other. This stunning natural beauty was borne of a volcano in the Caribbean Sea. From the highest point, Roach Hill at 1054 feet (321 meters), you can view the entire island and will truly appreciate the beauty around you.

BVI vacations to Jost Van Dyke are becoming increasingly popular, with as many as 7000 boats sailing into the Great Harbor each year. Tourists arrive by ferry or boat charter by way of Tortola or Saint Thomas. Thousands of visitors arrive at Foxy’s Bar for the annual party celebrating “Old Year’s Night” on December 31 st. Another favorite sailing destination on the island is The Soggy Dollar, which serves the infamous cocktail called the Painkiller. Boaters drop anchor, then swim to shore where they pay for their order with their wet money.

Since tourists arrive on Jost Van Dyke by boat, they do most of their site-seeing by walking on the island’s trails. Little Jost and Sandy Cay are great little getaways within the escape that is Jost Van Dyke. The island itself did not have public electricity until the end of 1989, and the entire island was not with power until late 1997. Until then, residents took advantage of the romantic atmosphere of beach torches and candlelight. Some islanders used generators while others utilized solar power even before it was a environmentally friendly alternative.

If you are interested in a destination like those featured in country musician Kenny Chesney’s videos, then a BVI vacation to Jost Van Dyke is what you want. The island was featured in the song “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” and mentioned by name in the lyrics to “Somewhere in the Sun.” So get “up and run to another life somewhere in the sun” at Jost Van Dyke.
