Charlotte Amalie
Located on the southern shore of St. Thomas is Charlotte Amalie, the largest city on the US Virgin Islands. Founded in 1666 as Taphus (meaning “tap house” or “beer house”), it was renamed in 1691 for the Queen of Denmark. Its beautiful deep water harbor is a yachter’s utopia and was once a haven for pirates. Visit the famous 99 Steps, the brick steps built by the Danes in mid-18th century to navigate the city’s steep hills.
